Lotus

“Lotus” was inspired by Hosoo’s cutting-edge Nishijin textiles. When I visited Hosoo’s workshop, I was surprised to find that the Nishijin fabric, which I had thought was flat, was actually a three-dimensional structure with many layers. The work looks both like a textile and origami. I named the work “Lotus” because the long process of making it overlaps with the trajectory of the growth of the lotus, which sprouts a beautiful flower from the mud.

「Lotus」は、細尾が手がける最先端の西陣織のテキスタイルにインスピレーションを受けたもの。細尾の工房を訪れた時、フラットだと思っていた西陣織が実は何層ものレイヤーが重なった立体構造だったことに驚いたことが発端だ。作品は、織物にも折り紙にも見える。一連の長い制作プロセスが、泥からすっと茎を伸ばし美しい花を咲かせる蓮の成長の軌跡に重なり、「Lotus」と名付けた。
